The Blessing of Scripture

I taught a lesson in Relief Society this week.

It was based on the talk given by Elder D. Todd Christofferson this past General Conference.
It has given me a renewed sense of dedication to more fully study the scriptures
personally and especially with my family.

He spoke of William Tyndale who was imprisoned and killed for translating and publishing the Bible in English. He spoke of how we owe not only Tyndale, but several others including Joseph Smith a great debt of gratitude for the great sacrifices they had made in recording and preserving the word of God.

In the talk Elder Christofferson spoke of three main things the
scriptures provide for us.

The Scri
ptures Enlarge Our Memory

1. They help us remember the Lord and our relationship with Him and the Father.
2. They remind us of what we knew in our premortal life.
3. They expand our memory by teaching us about epochs, people, and events.
4. They help us not forget what we and earlier generations have learned.

"Those who either don't have or ignore the recorded word of God eventually cease to believe in Him and forget the purpose of their existence."

The Scriptures are the Standard for Distinguishing Truth and Error

The world teaches:

-There are no absolute standards.
-God's love is permissive.
-There is no need for repentance.
-Social Justice
-When man is dead that is the end.

The Scriptures teach:

-God is a tender parent.
-We have divine potential.
-The commandments are the voice of reality & our protection against self-inflicted pain.
-Happiness lies in repentance & forgiveness through the Atonement.
-A civil society must include integrity, responsibility, selflessness, fidelity & charity.

The Scriptures Bring Us to Christ, Our Redeemer

"The central purpose of all scripture is to fill our souls with faith in God the Father and in His Son, Jesus Christ"

1. Faith that they exist.
2. Faith in the Father's plan for our immortality and eternal life.
3. Faith in the Atonement and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
4. Faith to make the gospel of Jesus Christ our way of life.
5.Faith to come to know Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.

"Study the scriptures carefully, deliberately. Ponder and pray over them. Scriptures are revelation and they will bring added revelation."

We have been blessed with more quantity of scripture then in any previous time in history.

"Surely with this blessing the Lord is telling us that our need for constant recourse to the scriptures is greater then in any previous time. May we feast continuously on the words of Christ that will tell us all things we should do."

It's at 9am on Sunday. It's at the "Green church"- I don’t know if you heard about the 1st energy efficient building, but it has solar panels on it. It’s so new that I can’t find an address but if you take the park lane exit off of I-15 and head west to Clark ln. Take a right, head west to the 4-way stop and take a left. It's your second church on the east side of the road. Call if you have any questions. I’m so excited for you guys to come and I know it means a lot to Kody.
