My Grandpa

My last living grandparent passed away.
I always thought of all people he would live a very long time.
He was 86 almost 87.
Last time I saw him living was last month, and he was struggling a bit.
He is at rest now and will be missed.

Daniel Dean Stuart (1923 - 2010)

Daniel Dean Stuart of Wellsville, age 86, died of complications due to a recent surgery and dementia with Lewy bodies, a disease with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's symptoms, July 7, 2010. Dean was born July 15, 1923, in Weiser, Idaho, the son of Daniel Hendry Stuart and Alice Beatrice Jenkins.
He was the half brother of William Walters Stuart, Melba Walters Stuart Lehrner, Afton Walters Stuart Harris, Elizabeth (Beth) Stuart, Grace Walters Stuart, Grace Hyde Maughan, and Gerald Jenkins Hyde, all deceased.
He married Thora June Newton on Nov. 15, 1941 in Boise, Idaho, and they had four children in Boise: Sandra Joan and Sharon Jean (twin who died at birth), Sally Lynn, and Billie Deana. He served in the Navy during World War II.
After completing his bachelor's at Utah State University, he earned a master's of industrial relations at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. They moved to Ashland, Ohio, in 1953 to work for A.L. Garber, a printing company, and four more children joined the family there: Valerie Jo, Lorie Angela, Daniel Andrew and Julie Alison. In 1966, they were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple.
After a job change to Schenectady, N.Y., in 1970, June valiantly fought cancer until she passed away in 1973. In 1974, Dean married Diane McMahon, who had two children from her previous marriage, Deborah Marie and Kimberly Marie. They were all sealed as a family in the Oakland LDS Temple in 1975.
Matthew Aaron was born to Dean and Diane in Pittsburgh in 1977.
Dean worked in the printing industry for his entire career, primarily in personnel and industrial relations, negotiating with as many as 13 unions at one time. He was often honored for his integrity and dedication. Among his many duties, he may have enjoyed his work with literacy the most. Within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many callings, including high counselor, bishop and stake president. He retired from the Pittsburgh Press in 1986, when he and Diane, with Kimberly and Matthew, moved to Wellsville. He landscaped their new home, which included planting more than 40 trees and bushes.
In 2001, he and Diane moved to Washington, D.C., while Diane worked for President George W. Bush. Without his land to work on, he concentrated on LDS temple work and supporting Diane (cooking, cleaning, you name it!). They returned to Wellsville in 2006.
Together with June and his first daughter Sharon, his third daughter Billie and two grandchildren preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Diane; his children: Sandra (Oren) Anderson, West Jordan, Utah; Sally (Larry) Winger, Payson, Utah; Valerie (Russ) Ader, Knoxville, Tenn.; Lorie Stuart, Benson, Utah; Daniel (Gina) Stuart, Layton, Utah; Julie Ball, Wellsville; Deborah (Bradly) Franke, Mendon; Kimberly Cutler, Boise, Idaho; and Matthew Stuart, Wellsville; 50 wonderful grandchildren, 88 fantastic great-grandchildren and five precious great-great-grandchildren.
The family would like to express special thanks and appreciation to Drs. Anderson and Murphy, the great nurses and CNAs on the Surgical Unit of LRH and especially Dr. Michael Stones for his compassionate care and concern for Dean and Diane during Dean's illnesses.
Funeral services will he held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 12, 2010, in the Wellsville Stake Center, 30 S. Center St. A viewing will be held Sunday evening, July 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St. in Logan, and at the Wellsville Stake Center prior to the service on Monday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. He will be buried near his father in the Wellsville Cemetery.
